a record for a record high for the number of suicides in the united states military. then there are the multiple deployments that families go through, the military moms and dads waiting for their spouses to return home. romney said he spoke to the american legion and vfw, but that doesn't cut if. this is the party that practically coined the phrase, we support the troops. this is the party that demonized people who wouldn't wear the flag lapel pin. this is the party that always claimed to have the upper hand on protecting the country and national security and love of country. and accusing president obama of not being american enough and not loving the country, but mitt romney can't bring himself to n insert a paragraph about the troops in harm's way right now and have been there multiple times in his acceptance speech? i think it is the ultimate quis qualifier. here's senator john kerry addressing the issue last night. >> no nominee for president should ever fail in the midst of a war to pay tribute to our troops overseas in his acceptance speech. mitt romney, mitt

states getting barraged by this stuff. karl rove thought citizens united would be the ticket. they were going to write checks and buy the presidency and buy the white house. it is not working out that way and i think the real test in fund-raising will be october. if people realize that you know, is there going to be a conventional wisdom that this thing has completely flipped away from romney. because that was really the one advantage they had and as of today, even that has evaporated. >> john: i'm really shocked. i think you're right eric. one of the things we discussed on the current tv coverage of the conventions last week was how citizens united in the beginning was seen to completely help the g.o.p. and the irony is it has hurt republican voters because throughout the primary season, fans of real conservatives like gingrich or santorum saw their candidates mowed down by the mitt romney money machine so the republican race for the nomination citizens united hurt the conservative voting base. >> here's the other
